If you are playing against a beginner, they will undoubtedly open for a bet of about twice the size of the pot. In this instance, it is better to fold and wait for a better opportunity to enter the pot.
When they have a good hand they will go all in and commit nearly their entire stake and then be forced to fold on their final bet. Fold at any sign of strength from these players but equally force them to fold if you have an unbeatable hand. These players tend to be transparent, so it should be relatively easy to read their hand from their game play.
Intermediate players are best handled by the use of aggressive play. Force them to fold most of the hands they play. If they counter your attack fold your hand or up the ante and really give them all you’ve got if you have a winnable hand. If multiple players are refusing to fold, leave the pot for them to fight over amongst themselves, as you want to remain in the strong position of an aggressor instead of being forced into the position of having to call.
These tactics will start to upset them and eventually they will make an all in bet purely on emotion. At this point if you have the hand you’ll beat them and win the large pot they have created.
These players may occasionally make bluffs but they don’t have the skill or expertise to pull it off. They make simple assumptions about what other players are holding. Allow them to run with their bluff and wait for them to make the wrong move.
Fold to their bluffs if pushed because it is better to let them have it, than to be caught out when their bluff comes in and they actually make their hand.
Aggressive game play is the best attack against a frustrating player who refuses to fold. They are probably the most profitable people at the table for anyone with a half decent hand. It is best to play loosely with them instead of tightening up and waiting for the perfect cards.
By following this strategy more times than not you are going to end up with their money. One of the places to create your wealth is in the preflop pot as you can be certain that they will want to at least get to look at what the flop brings in before making the decision whether to stay in the game. They may also chase after the elusive hand on the turn and maybe even on the river.
Inevitably, you will end up with the upper hand over this type of player, so wait for them to make their mistake and do not be drawn into acting impulsively against them. You will need to be willing to risk losing a few large pots in a row because the non-folder who is going to create opportunities for massive gains also will create the risk of a few massive losses. If you’re able to absorb these, you will overcome in the end.
