There is one key principle to spotting whether someone is bluffing or not: if your opponent acts weak he is strong and if he acts strong he is weak. Here you need to pick up on the unconscious cues from his body language, which indicate the true position. If someone is trying to convince you that he is either weak or strong, this is done in a more outward manner.
When a player tries to stare you down and looks you right in the eyes that is a dead give away that he is weak and attempting to intimidate you into folding. Another classic bluffing stance is sitting up straight and leaning forward while conveying arrogance in the way he speaks. Also the player who throws his chips with force into the pot is attempting another form of intimidation.
Players who are talkers tend to go quiet when they have a good hand, as they need to concentrate more on their play. Looking your opponents in the eye is a good way to try and read whether they are fearful or not. If they either look or sound nervous, they are probably bluffing.
Look for actions that are out of character. Betting patterns are also a good indication of whether a person is bluffing or not. Betting in one round and checking in the next is certainly an indication that the player is probably bluffing. Equally, if the player places a very large bet this is more often than not a bluff.
This is true for all stages of the game. So the best tactic is to call them on it and force them to make their hand or fold. Sometimes however, this may cost you more than you are prepared to pay, in these cases it may be more prudent to fold and let someone else expose them, to enable you to maintain your stake.
Sometimes players will attempt to intimidate others at the table by naming the hand they have. This most certainly is a bluff, because if the player really had that hand, they would want to play it out and get the greatest value by having you bet against them and loose.
A player will not bluff with a hand that has the potential to win a showdown they only bluff with those that have no chance to win in such a situation. If you follow these basic rules you may not be able to pick it every time but you will start making more informed calls and potentially winning more pots as a result.
