Learning this skill however, takes many hours because it involves understanding how others play, remembering what sort of risks they take and being able to pick up the tells that they unconsciously provide. You also need to realise that your opponents will also be picking up on your unconscious body language.
Before you consider moving up to a greater level of play, you need to be totally comfortable with your play at your current level. This means that you need to be comfortable with both the stakes of the game that you are currently playing and that you have impeccable hand reading skills in comparison to your opponents.
The river is the round where your hand reading skills are really put to the test. It is the time of the game that gives you the most information about the hand ranges of those of your opponents. That is why it is crucial to be able to read the river before considering moving up to a greater stakes game.
Great value bets and good bluffing opportunities will be missed if you are unable to read the state of play at this point in the proceeding of the game. If you are able to create an edge for yourself in this round, you could be ready for a higher stakes game.
When you are ready to move up, you should be identifying many circumstances in the course of river play, where your opponents checked their hand and you bet correctly, creating greater value for yourself. The key is to induce players to call your river bet, by deceiving them into thinking that if the don’t call you could be simply holding a bluff.
These are the questions you should be asking yourself when considering moving up.
How do you fare in showdowns?
Are you able to manipulate the play to get them for free or are others playing you?
Are you making good value betting decisions or are you consistently missing the value?
Are you consistently making better decisions against your opponents than they are making against you?
What considerations do you use to inform the size of your river bets?
Can you use the information of your opponent’s river bets to better inform your decision?
Of course, you do not have to have perfected your game play at one level before considering moving up. However, you need to be considerably more accomplished than the average player you are up against, or you will be slaughtered and your ability to win will suffer. Once you have mastered, both reading hands and sizing bets correctly you may well be ready to move up a level in the game.
The decision is up to you.
