Bluffing gives you the opportunity to improve your position in the game or move up. There are a number of situations where it is possible to pull this off.
When there are only a few players vying for the proceeds of the pot it can be one of the best times to attempt to bluff. This strategy is well known and therefore you have to be willing to hold your ground if challenged. Many players if they can afford to will stay in the game to keep you honest.

This is best attempted against tight players, as you can usually force them to fold pre flop, if you throw in a raise from a later position. After the flop, if you are still in a similar position and place a raise, you are forcing them to double their bet to stay in the game. In this situation, they may be forced to fold, which leaves you to collect the pot.

Preflop if you are on the button and everyone other than the blinds have folded, it is a good chance to play a bluff. This is especially true if you are playing against tight players and you also have the added opportunity that the situation may change from the need to bluff to a good hand with the luck of the draw from the flop.

It is all about perception. If you have pulled off a win through some skilful play or are on a winning streak, the other player will have built respect for you. However, you need to be careful how you play you hand. It has the most chance of success if you play it in a similar fashion to the hand or series of hands you just won. In this instance, you are attempting to give the other players the impression that this is history repeating itself.

When you fail to make your hand on the flop, you need to evaluate whether it is worth taking the risk and continuing with a bluff or whether to fold. This is a risky move, so you really need to evaluate your options and that of the other players still in the game to make their hand in subsequent rounds. This may be the case for everyone, as the flop may provide very little from which to build a good hand, but this is no guarantee that you will not be called to account.

On the river, most players will check if the option is available to them. It is therefore assumed that those betting are holding a good hand. This is especially true if drawing hands have been missed because players will usually react and fold when they know they cannot make their hand. However, if you are in a late position, suspicion may be raised and this is another bluff that you may have to sustain over the long haul of a number of rounds.

If a pair is turned up on the board lower two eights or lower, it is important to evaluate the body language of not only those left in the game but also those who have folded. Those no longer in play are more likely to tell you more as their guard is down as they no longer have a stake in this round.

If you are able to bluff successfully you will certainly improve you place in the game, as poker is just as much about playing the players as it is about playing the cards. If you can do both you are undoubtedly going to move up in the rankings.
