When you believe that you will either win a little or loose a lot, this mindset becomes self fulfilling as your defensive play saps the potential power and influence you could possibly have had to control the outcome of the game at that point. How you play your pocket aces will determine your success or otherwise with this potentially powerful hand.
Pocket aces are definitely the best hand to be holding preflop. It is also much better to raise preflop than simply limping into the pot. If you slow play your aces, you may be in danger of losing your hand against multiple players. You should play your hand similar to the play you would use for pocket kings except with the knowledge that you hold a much better hand. It is important to play this hand aggressively and raise without any thought of hesitation. Be careful not to expose your hand through your over enthusiastic betting.
You should always attempt to lure your opposing players to reraise you from which your are able to raise again. You should raise to three or four times of the Big Blind and if someone has already raised to this level you should double his bet. If however, the blinds get too big compared to your stack then the advantage you could get by raising preflop is minimised. However, even taking this into account, on the whole you are better off to raise instead limp into the pot preflop.
Your pocket aces are far better than any other hand and therefore you should treat them as the powerful weapon that they are and not treat them as a fragile liability.
The only positions you should even consider limping in is that of being under the gun, the player to the left of the big blind or in an early position on the table. This allows an aggressive player to clear the decks for you, as your ultimate goal apart from clean sweeping the pot pre-flop is to be head to head with either one or two players while holding the top pair. If you find yourself in either middle or late positions, you will have the benefit of having seen the previous play of the round.
Offensive play wins more hands overall. Therefore it is better to raise and not limp into the pot whatever you hand but this is especially true of pocket aces. They have the ability to annihilate the opposition and blow them right out of the water. You should be trying to win as much as you can from this hand both because of its rarity and its value in setting you up for the rest of the match.
